In 1972 the GTO reverted from a separate model to a 353.88 dollar option package for the LeMans and LeMans Sport coupes, with sales falling by 45 percent to 5,811. A ducktail rear spoiler from the Pontiac Firebird, planned as a GTO option, was canceled after a few cars were built when the mold used to produce it broke. Pontiac did not offer a production GTO convertible in 1972, though a LeMans Sport convertible could be ordered with a GTO engine.
