The 1972 model year brought a significant redesign after the AMC takeover, with the Jeepster part of the name removed so it was now the Jeep Commando, a new conventional full width egg crate grille, a longer 104 inch wheelbase and AMC engines, a 232 or 258 cubic inch six or the 304 V8, replacing the four cylinder and V6. A stronger frame, wider tread, a larger rear gas tank and larger drum brakes were also fitted.
