The options lists were drastically cut back for 1972. The convertible, leather seats, power windows and seats and all the big block engines were dropped, though a sunroof was offered, and the R/T series gave way to the Challenger Rallye with simulated fender vents. The grille was extended below the front bumper in a style nicknamed sad mouth, and the tail now had four separate rectangular lamps. The R/T series was replaced by the Challenger Rallye, which had four simulated vents on the front fenders, and the 1972 cars had flush mounted bumpers without bumper guards.
