For 1971 the Challenger Coupe became the entry level model, with fixed rear quarter windows and a basic black steering wheel in place of the Deputy. The grille was now split, the backup lights moved from the middle of the tail to the left and right, and the R/T's 383 was detuned to 300 horsepower because of lower compression. The year is the only one in the run that Edmunds ranked as a good one. Dodge had planned a 1971 T/A with a four barrel 340, which appeared in advertising but was never produced because Dodge had withdrawn from the racing series.
