The 1971 Ranchero is distinguished by a grille divided by a center section. It was the second and last year of the fifth generation Ranchero, based on the Torino, with its 1970 restyle and interior badging carried over, and trims that included the Ranchero GT. Chevrolet's El Camino used one body from 1968 to 1972, so the Ranchero remained a close competitor of the El Camino. The Ranchero of the fifth generation was based on the Torino and had a new body in 1970.
