The upgraded Cleveland V8 in the 1971 XY GTHO Phase III produced an estimated 385 brake horsepower, though Ford's official figures were much lower. The Phase III was Australia's fastest four door production car, and possibly the fastest four door sedan in the world at the time, with a top speed of 141.5 miles per hour. During the life of the XY the Australian uprated 200 and 250 six cylinder variants were introduced, and Geelong Foundry began to produce the Cleveland V8 motors.
