1970 Range Rover

Automobiles

The Range Rover went on sale in June 1970 as A Car For All Reasons: a five-seat permanent four-wheel drive with a Rover V8 detuned to 135 horsepower, coil springs, disc brakes on all four wheels, a top speed around 100 mph and a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. Twenty-six Velar-badged development vehicles had been built between 1969 and 1970. It was a two-door only, with aluminium panels over a steel safety frame, and its clean design was soon admired as an example of industrial design.
