For 1970 the Bronco Sport, which had been an option package since 1967, became a freestanding model. The Bronco had been built on its own chassis, with a Dana 30 front axle that was replaced by a Dana 44 in 1971, a coil sprung front axle located by radius arms, and a Ford 9 inch rear axle with leaf springs. Competitors by then included the Chevrolet Blazer, the Jeep Cherokee and the International Scout II.
