The Monte Carlo was formally introduced on September 18, 1969, for the 1970 model year, and it was available only as a two door hardtop. A labor strike at the Flint, Michigan assembly plant where most production was scheduled limited model year sales to 159,341, short of the projected figure, and full production was not achieved until February 1970. The styling was distinguished by a chromed rectangular grille with a fine grid pattern of 720 small squares.
