The Sambar of 1969 was in its fourth year of the second generation, a rear engined cabover truck and van sold with the EK31 356 cc engine at 20 PS, and a raised roof option. It competed with the new Mazda Porter of 1968 and was soon to see the Honda Vamos of 1970. The first two generations used the air cooled engine from the Subaru 360. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
