The Javelin went on sale in the autumn of 1967 as a 1968 model, with the AMX introduced just over four months later. Racing driver Gordon Johncock said the Javelin had a nice all round blend of features. The largest engine in the first few months of 1968 production was a 5.6 liter V8 that delivered 284 SAE brake horsepower. In 1968 AMC contracted Kaplan Engineering to campaign two AMC Javelins in the SCCA's Trans Am series, and total production for the 1968 model year was 55,125.
