The first Camaro, introduced in the fall of 1966, was styled by the team that had drawn the second generation Corvair of 1965 and shared its subframe design with the 1968 Chevy II Nova. Eight engines were offered, and the Z/28 option was introduced in December 1966, with 602 sold in 1967. A Camaro RS/SS convertible with a 396 engine paced the Indianapolis 500 that year. The Camaro shared its F body platform with the Pontiac Firebird in all of its generations.
