To enhance its distinctiveness Cadillac adapted the Toronado's front wheel drive unified powerplant package, mating a Cadillac 429 V8 to a Turbo Hydramatic 425 automatic transmission. GM styling chief Bill Mitchell chose angular, crisp styling for the Eldorado, setting it apart from the more streamlined Riviera and Toronado, and it was the first and only Cadillac model with the headlamps concealed behind moveable covers, for two years only, 1967 and 1968.
