The Charger made its debut in the middle of the 1966 model year, sharing its chassis and front sheet metal with the Coronet. A fastback roofline, a grille with fully rotating headlights and an interior with four bucket seats and a full length console set it apart. All engines were V8s, from the 318 to the 426 Hemi. Production for the half year came to 37,344, and the car's first NASCAR season showed that its fastback body generated lift at speed.
