The XP, released in 1965, saw the Fairmont introduced as an upmarket variant, offered in both sedan and station wagon body styles, replacing the Futura sedan and Squire wagon. Ford's future in Australia depended on this car succeeding, and a promotion drove a fleet of XP Falcons around the You Yangs testing grounds for 70,000 miles. The Falcon won the Wheels Car of the Year Award. This model was also the last to include the Squire range with wood panels.
