The 1965 Custom and Custom 500 were the economy line of the redesigned full size Ford range, the Custom 500 marketed toward budget conscious buyers who wanted a low cost automobile, and the base Custom sold to police and taxi fleets. Most Customs and Custom 500s were fitted either with a base inline six cylinder engine or a small block V8 engine, 289 cubic inches in the early years, though the full range of V8 engines was available for law enforcement customers.
