The Monaco arrived on September 25, 1964 for the 1965 model year, aimed at the Pontiac Grand Prix in what became known as the personal luxury market. It was built on the Custom 880 two door hardtop body with special badging, front and rear bucket seats, rattan style trim and a standard 383 cubic inch V8 with a console shifter, and was marketed as a limited edition Dodge for the man with unlimited taste. Its front end looked much like the cheaper Polara, and after one year the name moved to a broader full size line.
