The Impala was redesigned for 1965 and set an all time industry sales record of more than a million cars in the United States in one year. A luxury package for the four door hardtop was introduced, coded RPO Z18, which became the Caprice. The 409 engine was dropped early in the model year, so early cars could have the 409 and a tiny fraction had the 396 big block. The Super Sport trim changed from engine turned aluminum to a blackout trim strip that ran under the taillights.
