The first Malibu was the top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle in its first year of 1964, and it stayed a trim level of the Chevelle until 1972. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible. It added bucket seats, a center console with an optional four speed manual or Powerglide transmission, engine gauges and special wheel covers, and could be had with any six cylinder or V8 engine offered in the Chevelle.
