The Sambar of 1963 was in its third year, competing with the front engined Suzulight Carry and the 1964 Daihatsu Hijet cabover. The reverse gearshift position was a left pattern selection, instead of a right pattern selection, and the EK series engine could be accessed via a hatch inside the vehicle. Provisional camping bunk beds were available. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
