The Comet line was folded under the Mercury brand for the 1962 model year, with Comet models wearing the Mercury brand and Comet model emblems. For 1962 and 1963 the Comet shared a considerable number of body and mechanical parts with the short lived Fairlane based Mercury Meteor intermediate. The compact Comet shared a naming convention of the early 1960s Space Race with the Mercury Meteor. The first generation Comet was a compact based on the Ford Falcon platform and was originally meant to be an Edsel.
