The Impala was restyled on the General Motors B platform for the first time for 1961, with a more trim and boxy shape than the cars of 1958 to 1960. The Sport Coupe had a bubbleback roof line, and a two door pillared sedan was sold for 1961 only and was rarely ordered. The Super Sport option debuted that year, and was available on any Impala including sedans and wagons. The Super Sport package on the 1961 car could be had with the 348 cubic inch V8 in 305, 340 and 350 horsepower forms, and only 142 Super Sports left the factory with the 409.
