In 1959 Ford introduced the option of four wheel drive on the F-Series. It had previously been a conversion outsourced to Marmon-Herrington, but now Ford was the first of the big three American makers to make four wheel drive trucks itself. The line included the F-100 4x4 with a gross weight rating up to 5,600 pounds, the F-250 4x4, and the F-350 one ton, and was powered by the same overhead valve sixes and V8s used in Ford cars.
