For the 1956 model year the Continental nameplate returned as a flagship vehicle, with Ford creating a namesake brand centered on the new car. It was given the Mark II suffix to distinguish it from the similar Bentley Continental. At 10,000 dollars it was the most expensive automobile sold by a domestic maker. It used a model specific chassis with a 126 inch wheelbase, shared its Lincoln Y-block V8 with Lincoln-Mercury, and each car was hand built, with every body panel hand sanded and hand finished.
