Dodge first used the Lancer name in 1955 to designate the two and four door hardtop models without a center pillar in the full size Coronet, Royal and Custom Royal lines, so a Lancer was a body style label rather than a model of its own. The first version debuted as the hardtop version of the full size 1955 Dodge and was produced in that form until 1959, when the name came to stand for the top of the Dodge range.
