For 1950 the Mercury Monterey made its debut as the flagship version of the Mercury Eight. The 1949 body style was the basis of the custom car legacy of the Eight, which became the definitive lead sled, much as the Ford V8 was becoming the definitive hot rod. The Eights were among the first models to receive an aftermarket OHV engine swap, since Oldsmobile and Cadillac had developed high compression OHV V8 engines in 1949.
