Production of the CJ-2A began on July 17, 1945, overlapping with the military MB, of which roughly 9,000 more were produced through September 1945. The CJ-2A looked much like a civilianized MB, with a tailgate and a side mounted spare wheel, and many early cars were built with leftover military components such as engine blocks and in a few cases modified frames. Strikes at suppliers sometimes forced the use of MB parts, since Willys relied heavily on outside suppliers.
