The Ford Model Y was in production in England from 1932, where it is sometimes remembered as the Ford Eight, reflecting its fiscal horsepower rating, and in France from 1932, where it was known as the Ford 6 CV. It was the first Ford automobile specifically designed for markets outside the United States, replacing the Model A in Europe. Plans to build it in the United States were scrubbed when a cost accounting showed it would be only slightly cheaper than the Model B.
