Lanchester

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Lanchester was a British car marque built by the Lanchester Motor Company Limited between 1899 and 1955, begun by the three Lanchester brothers, Frederick, George and Frank, with the financial support of the Pugh brothers of Rudge-Whitworth. Work on the first car began in 1895 and it ran on the road in 1896, designed from first principles as a car rather than a horseless carriage, with a single-cylinder engine with two connecting rods turning counter-rotating crankshafts. The first production cars came in 1900 and in 1902 Lanchester was the first to market disc brakes. The company was at Armourer Mills in Birmingham and then at Sandy Lane in Coventry, was bought by the BSA Group in 1930, and with Daimler became part of Jaguar Cars in 1960. The marque has been dormant since, and its rights passed to Jaguar Land Rover.
