Honda gave the XR100R the R designation for the first time in 1985, with a major rear suspension upgrade to a more race-like single coil-over design, the Pro-Link system, and a new swingarm. The XR600R arrived in 1985 as a replacement for the XR500R and was used in Baja races. The XR350R ended after the 1985 model year, when it had a dry sump and a single large carburetor in place of the dual progressive carburetors of the 1983 and 1984 models.
