Indian Motorcycle is an American motorcycle marque whose name goes back to a company that operated in Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1901 to 1953. That company was known as the Hendee Manufacturing Company until 1923, and during the 1910s it grew into the largest motorcycle maker in the world. Its factory team took the first three places in the 1911 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, and its Scout and Chief V-twins, introduced in the early 1920s, became its best known models. The firm went bankrupt in 1953, after which the name passed through a series of owners, among them Brockhouse Engineering, Associated Motor Cycles, Floyd Clymer, the Gilroy, California company and the Kings Mountain, North Carolina company, most of them selling imported or rebadged machines or small numbers of new ones. Polaris bought the brand in 2011, moved production to Spirit Lake, Iowa, and from 2013 built a new range around the Thunder Stroke 111 V-twin. In February 2026 a majority stake passed to the private equity firm Carolwood LP.
