Indian Prince

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The Indian Prince was an entry-level single-cylinder motorcycle made by the Hendee Manufacturing Company, maker of Indian motorcycles, from 1925 to 1928. It was designed by Charles B. Franklin and was meant for beginners and for export. The 1925 machine had a separate gearbox and a wedge-shaped fuel tank bolted to a tube under the tank, and it was redesigned for 1926 with a fuel tank shaped like that of the contemporary Scout. Both versions used coil-sprung girder forks rather than the leaf-sprung trailing-link forks of the Chief and the Scout, and a front brake was added in 1928, the last year of production. Harley-Davidson began building a single-cylinder motorcycle of its own for 1926. Although the Prince was restyled after its first year and discontinued after four years, its frame and forks were revived in 1933 for the V-twin Motoplane and Pony Scout, the Pony Scout was later renamed the Junior Scout and continued until the Second World War, and girder forks were used on the Sport Scout of 1934 to 1942 and on the Chief of 1945 to 1948.
