A German electrical engineer and industrialist, founder of the company that became Siemens AG. He built the worlds first electric passenger train, demonstrated in Berlin in 1879, and in May 1881 his company opened the worlds first electric tram service, at Gross-Lichterfelde near Berlin, establishing electric traction as a practical alternative to steam for rail transport.
