Railway Pioneers and Engineers

Engineers, inventors and administrators whose locomotives, track, signalling and railway management built the railway as a mode of transport, from the first practical steam locomotives through the electrification and reorganization of national rail networks. Belongs here: locomotive designers, civil and mechanical railway engineers, and railway administrators or reformers whose chief legacy is the railway itself. Does not belong here: railway financiers and state officials whose chief role was political or financial rather than engineering, grouped under transport business, logistics and policy figures, or figures from other modes.
