The GT6 Mark I was introduced in 1966 and called the Triumph GT6, after Michelotti's fastback design for the Spitfire GT prototype, returned to England late in 1963 for evaluation, had been adopted by the Triumph racing programme for the 1964 season as it was deemed to provide an aerodynamic benefit over the standard Spitfire body shape. The Spitfire racing programme resulted in 1965 in 13th overall and a first in class at Le Mans. Its model years run from 1966 to 1968.
