Toyota began developing the second generation in 2000 under chief engineer Chikuo Kubota, with the design by Shigeya Hattori and Hideo Karikomi of Hino chosen in 2001. A bigger and more powerful Tacoma was unveiled at the Chicago show on 4 February 2004 and launched on 18 October 2004 as a 2005 model, in eighteen combinations of cab, transmission and engine.
