In 1978 the Celica Supra was created after North American dealers asked Toyota for a rival to the very popular Datsun 280Z, and it was built as a six cylinder car on the Celica, sold in Japan as the Celica XX with a choice of two straight six engines. It was first exported outside Japan in January 1979. This was the first model year of the Toyota Supra (first generation, A40 and A50), 1978 to 1981, the first generation covered for the Toyota Supra; the 1979 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Supra run from 1978 to 2026.
