The fourth generation of the Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin, the AE85 and AE86, was released in May 1983 and offered in two door coupe and three door liftback body styles. It was the last rear wheel drive generation. This was the first model year of the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE85 and AE86 series), 1983 to 1986, which took over from the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (TE71 series); the 1984 model year follows it.
