The Sera debuted in 1988 as the Toyota AXV-II concept car in a near production ready form, and a year later the series version appeared at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota marketed it in three trim versions called Phases, Phase I from March 1990 to May 1991, Phase II from May 1991 to June 1992 and Phase III from June 1992 to December 1995, with about 12,000 of the 15,852 cars produced being Phase I. Stewart Reed first presented the concept to Eiji Toyoda in the early 1980s at Toyota's Calty design studio in Newport Beach.
