The 20 Series was upgraded to the now classic 40 Series in 1960, when Toyota made many production changes by buying new steel presses. Mechanically the FJ40 was given a new 3.9 liter F engine and the Land Cruiser finally received low range gearing, though it continued with the three speed main gearbox. The J30 wagon, built on a J20 chassis, was produced for only nine months from February to October 1960. By 1965 global production surpassed 50,000 vehicles and the Land Cruiser was the best selling Toyota in the United States.
