The S220 was first shown as a concept in Tokyo in October 2017 and reached showrooms on 26 June 2018, with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. In October 2019 Indonesia chose it as the official car for its cabinet ministers. Toyota planned a facelift in 2020, but its president Akio Toyoda rejected it in favor of a new generation, and a minor update in November 2020 gave the interior a single 12.3 inch touchscreen.
