The second generation Carina was released in Japan in August 1977 and became available in Germany in December 1977, with the chassis mostly the same as that of the facelifted late Carinas of the first generation. In November 1977 the 3T-U 1,800 cc engine emissions were updated. This was the first model year of the Toyota Carina (second generation, A40 and A50), 1977 to 1980, which took over from the Toyota Carina (first generation, A10 and A30); the 1978 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Carina run from 1970 to 2001.
