The XV30 was a ground up redesign built on the platform of the Highlander, and its development time dropped from 36 to 26 months. It was the first Camry with no station wagon, because wagons were losing buyers to minivans and crossover SUVs, and it was sold only as a sedan. American production began in July 2001 and the car was released that August as a 2002 model, then reached Japan in September 2001. Two front and rear designs were offered, a conservative one for Southeast Asia and Taiwan and a plainer one elsewhere. The Camry Solara stayed on the older chassis until a new one for 2004.
