Toyota introduced the Avensis name on a new model launched at the end of 1997. It was largely based on its predecessor, the Carina E, with the platform and engines carried over, and was built at the Burnaston factory in Derby, where production of the five door Corolla also started. It had the choice of four engines and three body styles, the estate being essentially the Japanese market second generation Caldina. It was facelifted in August 2000 with variable valve timing and navigation as standard, but overall sales stayed low.
