Lexus RX

Automobiles

The Lexus RX is a luxury crossover SUV that Lexus has sold since 1998, and many sources count it as the first luxury crossover SUV. It was released in Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier and export sales as the Lexus RX began in March 1998. The idea of a car halfway between a luxury sedan and an SUV came from executives of Toyota Motor Sales in Nagoya in 1993, designer Makoto Oshima's final design was approved in December 1995, and the SLV concept previewed it at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1997. Market research behind it found that only 7 percent of SUV owners drove off-road. Five generations have been built, from compact to mid-size, with front- and four-wheel drive and V6 and hybrid powertrains.
