The first Highlander went on sale in North America in January 2001, built on the Camry platform. In Japan and Australia the Kluger got a center console integrated with the dashboard, a feature the North American car at first lacked. This was the first model year of the Toyota Highlander (first generation, XU20), 2001 to 2007, the first generation covered for the Toyota Highlander; the 2002 model year follows it.
