For 2026 the base model returns. In August 2026 Project Midnight, driven by Scott Speed, set a new record in the Mount Washington Hillclimb Auto Race with a time of 5:11.89. The second generation WRX continued as the standalone model, sold in the United States without an STI version. The WRX is an all wheel drive sport compact car originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. The name WRX stands for World Rally eXperimental, according to Subaru.
