The Sumo, known as the Domingo in Japan, was launched in 1983 as a cabover microvan based on the Sambar but with longer front and rear bumpers and a larger engine from the Justy. Because of these changes it did not meet the kei car rules on size and engine displacement, which set the tax a buyer pays, and it could be ordered with four wheel drive. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar. The name Sumo was meant to evoke the strength of a sumo wrestler.
