In 1978 the Sambar 550 brought slight increases in the width and length of the vehicle. Along with larger bumpers the new bodywork also featured a fully revised front design. Wheelbase and tread also increased by 90 millimeters. The interior and dashboard were redesigned, and air conditioning became an available option. Four wheel drive became optional in 1980. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
