The styling was revised for 1971, adding a faux front grille to create a more modern appearance as well as bringing the corporate look of the all new compact Subaru Leone. The Sambar of 1971 was in its sixth year of the second generation, with the EK33 engine of 26 PS. The first two generations used the air cooled engine from the Subaru 360. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
